Okay, this post is tremendously behind schedule, because I intended to post about it at the beginning of the school year. Now, it's report card time, and I'm taking a minuscule "time out" to update you all on the rest of the "Daily" 5 centers in my room. Though truthfully, I'm still sifting through trying to figure out how to mesh it together seamlessly with Reading Street. It's been a process... that's for sure! Have a looksie! I'd LOVE to hear what you put in your different stations to keep the Daily 5 running smoothly!

The Listen to Reading Center! I primarily use the story of the week here to give students more exposure to it. :) There's nothing really special about it. There are rugs to sit on, headphones to plug in, and a radio system with the CD already set. |
|
The Read to Self basket is kept on my bookshelves for easy access. |
|
I use drink stirrers for pointers... but I think some of them are growing legs and walking out of the room...so I may move them into my Guided Reading goodies exclusively. They do make GREAT pointers though, and they are FUN! I also added some fab blogging goodies to this center... like Cara's bookmarks from The First Grade Parade! |
|
I believe these are from What the Teacher Wants! Great blog! |
|
I put these together during my first year as a Title teacher. They have seen better days, but they still work! ;) |
|
I put some task cards in the center to extend thinking for some of my top readers or fast finishers. |
|
I put lots of goodies in my Work with the Teacher bin... some things I made... some from blogs... some from TpT. I put everything in one place so I can grab items at a moment's notice... if I notice that I need to reinforce something. Some of my favorite tools are my wikki sticks, my highlighters, and the little highlighting trackers for kiddos who still need to track while they read. They think it's so much cooler than finger tracking, but there are witch fingers and claws, mini-fairy wands, goggly eye pointers and drink stirrers available for variety too. :) |
|
The numbered tubs (previously & briefly known as Math Tubs) were recently moved to the bookshelf to house all of my
Guided Reading manipulatives. I keep them close by, since my table is right next to this bookshelf for easy access. The
baskets in the bottom house my leveled guided reading books and worksheets for the week. I keep my Work with Teacher
basket and my conferring notebooks on the top of the shelf. :)

Your Daily 5 centers look great!
ReplyDeleteAMAZING!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI found your blog a couple of months ago, and I absolutely love it. I am a fellow third grade teacher, and I love perusing your site to get more ideas. Thank you for taking the time to post and share pictures! :)
ReplyDeleteI love teaching the Daily 5 and what I love most is the flexibility with it. Your centers are great and you gave me some ideas to mix it up for next term. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteWow! These are really great ideas that I can use, even though I don't do the daily 5. Thanks
ReplyDeleteWe use Daily 5 in Kindergarten. At first I wasn't sure how it was supposed to work but now it is amazing. We use Bookflix & Leapfrogs for Listen to Reading.

ReplyDeleteHi Amanda,
ReplyDeleteAll I can think is "wow"! I wasn't sure about the Daily 5, but think it's worth a read after seeing how you have incorporated it into your class.
Jen
p.s. where did you get the super cute graphic of the kids reading (on your pink bookmark)?
Those "Book Project" cards look awesome!!! I've searched all over the What the Teacher Wants site for them to no avail! =( Do you have a link to find these? I love all the ideas you have! =)
ReplyDeleteI looked and looked too here is the link to them: http://whattheteacherwants.blogspot.com/2010/12/reading-project-cards.html The picture does NOT match the cards she recreated and shared. :)
DeleteI am new to the Daily 5 so I am very happy to see your ideas! Thanks for so much inspiration!
ReplyDeleteI'm your newest follower! Check out my new "manly" kindergarten teaching blog!

LOVE all the great ideas!!! My summer is being spent doing an overload of teacher projects. :) I love the "book project" books as well and can't find them anywhere!! Would you happen to have a link for those??? That would be wonderful!! :)
ReplyDeleteWow! Love what you've done. I've looked on your tpt store and found a lot more that I like! Do you have the task cards in your store? I like both the big ones (blue trimmed) and the smaller ones with the graphics.
ReplyDeleteThanks!

Hi Amanda!
ReplyDeleteDaily 5 is AMAZING isn't it!?!
I have a quick question for you. Where did you purchase the lime green book baskets/bins that you have throughout your classroom? I need that size! Your room is so fun! Enjoy the chaos of back to school!

I thought I was the only one to use cocktail stirrers in my room!! ...... I also use these ones http://www.glow.co.uk/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/376x/dada977446bdff2152d3b1a5178c68c9/u/v/uv-cocktail-stirrers-2.jpg for highlighting words they need to look at closer... or if I ask them to eg "find the word after" I've found it helps kids isolate the beginnings or ends of words as well.
ReplyDeleteOh .. will also be stealing your timer idea for my most popular activities so kids can self regulate how long they spend on an activity!
